This is a five part series. Please see the link at the bottom of the page to read other parts of this series.
In the previous article Part 4 Improve Yourself With Love of this series, we discussed how part of loving our bodies is using baby steps to improve things we can. In this part of the series we will discuss the art of pampering ourselves.
Pampering Yourself Is Not Selfish
Often, we feel we have so many responsibilities and other people to take care of, that taking any time to spend on ourselves is selfish. This simply is not so. If you do not take care of yourself, you will not have the strength, mentally or physically, to take care of the other things in your life. By taking care of yourself first, you actually are better able to take care of your family, job, home and anything else that depends on you.
Pampering VS Self-Care
Pampering can be as easy as self-care.If you are a stay at home parent, or work full time outside the home, even self care can be difficult. This would be such things as making sure you get in enough water each day. Taking the time to bathe (you moms of young children know what I mean, this needs real time management!). If you have young children it can be difficult to find the time, but a hot shower can be a huge treat. Eating healthy, moving a little each day and the list begins to get overwhelming. In Part 4 we discussed taking baby steps to make changes. Here we are discussing pampering. For this part of the exercise we are focusing on FUN. If moving more does not sound fun to you, ignore if for now. Pampering and self-care often look very much alike. Both are taking care of you, both are positive and improve mental and physical health. In my book, the difference is pampering should be fun.
Things that are more on the pampering side of self-care are pedicures, manicures, massages, meditation, buying a new top, a bubble bath, a trip, and so forth. It is easy enough to say that you should go pamper yourself, but who has the time or money for a regular massage or vacation? When they happen that is great! I would love that level of pampering every week or month, but it’s not going to happen in my crazy life. So how do I find the time to pamper myself?
First, make your me time a priority. Plan for it. Put it on the calendar. If you have small children you may have to ask for help. Can your spouse or significant other help? Do you have a friend or family member who can help? Can you do a trade off with another mother? If not can you work something in during nap time or after the kids go to bed? You may have to get creative.
Pampering does not have to be huge, it can be something as small as a glass of ice cold lemonade on a hot day. It is anything you consider indulgent.
Less Than 5 Minute Ideas
Pampering does not have to be huge, it can be something as small as a glass of ice cold lemonade on a hot day. It is anything you consider indulgent. If you have very little time and are trying to fit some pampering in here are a few ideas.
- If you normally stay in your pj’s, put on clothes first thing
- Wear a new top or outfit to the grocery store
- Put lemon or other fruit in your water
- Use pretty plates to eat out of
- Wear a new necklace or bracelet
- Next time you are at the store, pick up a new barrette, wear it the next day
- Walk outside and just breathe deeply, look around you and really notice nature
- Listen to your favorite song
- Color for five minutes
- Put on some lotion that smells amazing
- Make a list of things you can do to pamper yourself.
Finding time to take care of yourself is important. Indulging in the things that make you feel whole and loved is part of that. We are not selfish if we take the time to find out what makes us happy. When we are happy and healthy, we can better help those we love. You are a wonderful, amazing person. There is no one else in the world like you. This series is designed to help you love yourself and in doing so be able to share your unique gifts with the world. This is a life long journey. As you focus on your strengths and treat yourself with love, you will begin to realize all that you can achieve and offer.
